Back to School – First Day of Math Class

My students will be coming back to school soon, and I need to make a plan.

They’ll be finding their new spot in their new room, and I’ve worked hard to make it look nice and feel comfortable.

They’ll be nervous to meet their new teacher and new friends, so we’ll play an introduction game* or two.

They’ll be bringing all their new supplies, and we’ll need to get them organized.  Maybe I’ll have something for them to color with their new crayons.

But what about Math?

I’m their math teacher.  Shouldn’t we do something math oriented?  But it’s the first day of school for goodness sakes.  Do we really want to start math on the first day of school? ABSOLUTELY!  Your students will be there, and they’ll be excited about school, so let’s not send them home after their first day without getting them started in math!

So how about a quiz?  A QUIZ on the first day of school?   Of course!  What better way to introduce your math class!  But this is no ordinary quiz.  There are no wrong answers – only answers that make them think about math and all the different kinds of math that we’ll be learning for the next nine months!

introduction to 4th grade math

Introduction to 4th Grade MATH   <- (Click here for resources!) is a power point to introduce the role numbers play in our every day lives.  Questions such as:

How long did it take you to brush your teeth?

How much did your shoes cost?

and, How many slices of pizza can you eat?

will get your students thinking about the way numbers will be used in your math class – minutes and seconds, dollars and cents, and 3 of the 8 slices of a pizza!

This quick math lesson will make your first day of school fun as well as meaningful!

It’s FREE, and it’s editable in case you need it for a grade other than 4th!

*My favorite Back to School introduction game:

My students will sit on the floor in a circle – if possible.  I will start the introductions by telling my name and something simple about myself such as: “I like to ride bikes.” or “I have a cat.”  The student to my left will then do the same, and when finished he/she will repeat to the class my name and my statement.  Then the next person to the left will introduce themself and reintroduce their classmate and me!  This goes on all around the circle until it returns to me.  I must reintroduce each of my students and tell what I have learned about them!

Not only is this a no-cost, no-prep, fun activity, it is also the best way for me to learn my students’ names and something that they identify with on the very first day of school!  Hope you enjoy it as much as I always do!
